Tipps' Tips Fall Quarter 2011

For the week of...October 18th, 2011

Right now, the most "frequently asked question" I receive from students concerns their financial aid. I have had the pleasure of speaking to current students in Mrs. Bray's Career Development classes regarding an overall picture of this topic. I freely admit that I know enough about the subject to be extremely dangerous. To be sure, I am not an expert on the subject. But, I'm wise enough to know that if a student asks me a question about their situation, I will tell that I don't know the answer, but will have an answer for them hopefully within 24 hours. I actually had a situation like that this morning with a student who had emailed me with a question regarding their financial aid. I put out a "call for help" and within 15 minutes I was able to get an answer as to how to resolve the concern.

Now, understand I'm not advocating for every student to email me with their concerns, but I state this because I feel it is important for each student to understand that their financial aid package is different from everyone else's. Right now, the financial aid planners are making a herculean effort to reach out to several students about their financial aid package to help resolve some concerns that exist right now. If you receive an email, phone call, or request to see financial aid, please understand that it is very important that you respond to the request. Again, it's all in an effort to ensure that everyone's financial aid concerns are taken care of.

On a different matter, you may have seen information posted outside of the business office door regarding "living expense" or "stipend" checks. Our college has partnered with Sallie Mae to process student stipends. Students will now receive their refunds through Sallie Mae rather than directly through the school. This new process will speed up the time that it takes for you to receive your check because Sallie Mae processes checks daily and mails the check directly to you. Of course, if your address changes, you must notify Miller-Motte within 24 hours so that we can update your contact information. Also, understand that this does not mean that Sallie Mae is servicing your loan; they are simply working with us to help streamline this process.

So much to do; not enough time to do it. Guess I need to sit in on the time management segment of the Career Development class…right??!!

Have a great week! We'll talk again!

Mr. Tipps
